Rebuilding Your Leadership Team After Covid

You might be thinking, “how can Van Halen help me rebuild my leadership team?”

Do you remember who the original singer of Van Halen was? That’s right, it was “Diamond” David Lee Roth.

There’s a continuing debate amongst music purists about who was a better frontman for the band. Personally, I’m a Diamond Dave kinda guy.

But the argument can be made that the band was better with Sammy out front .

“Hagar albums, all four hit a peak on the U.S. charts of #1. The highest-charting Roth-led Van Halen album was a #2, and it took until 1984 to snatch that.” Guitar Player magazine

The point is. Sometimes when you lose a key leader from your leadership team, it’s possible to come back stronger. Like Van Hagar!

In this crazy time, small business owners face many challenges.  From the uncertainty of owning and running a business and losing key members of your leadership team. To the overwhelming sense of responsibility to your employees, always being on the job and missing time with your family.

Whether it is for performance or the economy, I have always said that having to tell your employees they no longer have a job is THE HARDEST decision a small business owner will ever have to make. And we are talking to business owners who have to make those decisions.

It’s a tight line to walk. Do you take care of your family, do you take care of your leadership team, or do you take care of your employees? There is no clear answer. After all, these are the people who have stood by your side from the beginning.  Showed up when no one else would and have given you their blood, sweat, and tears and helped you get where you are today.

And now, you’re faced with a decision to tell them you have to let them go.  The bottom line, these are the hard decision that we sign up for as business-owners.

After you make the decisions and dealt with the fallout, it’s essential that you stop looking backward. It’s time to start looking to the future.  You can’t tell how quickly things will return to normal, but when they do, you have to be ready.

Consider the 3 realities when you start looking forward

1. Your business may not survive.

If your business survives,

2. It won’t look the same.

3. Your leadership team won’t look the same.

Let’s look at these points one-by-one

This is pretty simple.  Some of us won’t make it through this epidemic. I don’t want to sound harsh or unsympathetic. I am a small business owner too and am facing the same reality.

If you are fortunate enough to survive through this “shelter in place,” you owe it to yourself and business to be ready to take advantage of the rebuilding economy and what is to come in the future.

The demands of our business might be different.  The way we conduct business might be different. But, the one thing we know for sure is… your competition will be different.

You have to be thinking about how you can improve your business while things are slow or you’re sitting on the sidelines waiting for the coach to call your name.

You need to be looking for ways to improves your systems, process, quality and/or delivery.

As Spencer Johnson, author of Who Moved My Cheese says, “If you do not change, you can become extinct.”

Your Leadership Team Won’t Look the Same.

If you have leaders you value and want to bring back, there is a good chance they won’t be there when you call.  People need to pay the bills and put food on the table, so they will take work where they can get it. And, most of those people (the people you value) have a degree of loyalty. So, they won’t just up and leave the people who showed up and gave them a job when they really needed one to rejoin your company.

There is also the chance that their new role offers better hours, benefits, schedule and pay.  Regardless, they have moved on and won’t be coming back any time soon. 

When you go into the market to hire your new leadership team, it is important to understand that these new individuals will bring a similar but different set of skills and experience. And each time you bring a new leader on board it will change the requirements of the next leader and even employee you bring on board.

If you continue to look into the future, you can strategically leverage the skills and experience of your new leadership team, improve your business and, make it stronger than it was in the past.
