In my last blog, I talked about paying your people competitively. But providing a great work environment and treating them well is just as important.

– if not more – important.


Today’s marketplace is more competitive than ever. Recruiting HIT (High-Impact Talent) is getting harder and harder to find…and retain. Your reputation has to be stellar. Your reputation is the best enticement to finding the exact right HIT that can position and transform your business for profitable growth.


Consider this:


People Talk


A lot. Especially within specific industries and competitive markets. A recent online study showed that 69% of job seekers would NOT take a job with a company that had a bad reputation … even if they were unemployed! Think about that for a moment.


And, by the way, it’s equally important to treat everyone with respect … even the people you don’t hire. One of most powerful, compelling reasons to do this is you want people


to say …


“They didn’t hire me, but I have nothing but good things to say about them. They were very professional, helpful and (most important of all) got back to me to tell me they weren’t hiring me. “


Make Social Media Your Friend


It’s true. Social media is the great equalizer. Once something is “out there” you won’t ever get it back…there is nowhere to hide. Job sites like The Job Crowd, Indeed and Glassdoor are chock full of reviews of all kinds. People do most of their research online long before they apply for a position. The Pew Research company reports that 77% of adults in the United States own a smartphone, while the numbers climb as high as 92% in the 18-29 age range. Not to be outdone, the 30-49 age group follows closely behind, with 88% being smartphone owners. In addition to that, 74% of people aged 50-64 have one.


And they WILL use those smartphones to check you out online! The average candidate will do at least 1-hour of research on you and your company. What’s more is that it doesn’t take a whole lot to get a bad reputation – or a good one. Don’t sabotage your reputation online because recruiting will just be that much more difficult.



What If My Reputation Isn’t So Great?


The secret is in what Richard Branson says. If you want to repair or earn a great reputation, it starts with your people. You have to look long and hard at how your employees are treated across the board, up the ladder, down the ladder and all around the ladder. If you sense something is amiss, take immediate steps to root out and fix the problem. (Our article “Psycho Killer” explains how.) And let everyone know you care about them emotionally, professionally and, yes, financially:



  • Invest in your people. Pay for them to get better. I have a client that has a policy that every employee MUST take 2 personal and/or professional development course each year, paid by the employer. Then they give the employees raises after they successfully complete certain courses. OR they invest in their people to get the education they need for their next promotion within the company.


The bottom line here is that your bottom line starts with your talent. And what they think, perceive or know your company. Your brand. Businesses of all sizes and shapes are beginning to operate more and more in a “reputation economy”.
